IAAO Executive Director named ASAE Fellow
The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) announced that IAAO Executive Director Debra McGuire, MBA, FASAE, CAE, IOM was among five association leaders selected for ASAE’s 2023 class of Fellows. The ASAE Fellows program annually confers honorary recognition upon exceptional association leaders making noteworthy and sustained contributions to their organizations and the association community.
 
“Being recognized as an ASAE Fellow by my peers is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career in association management to date,” said Debra N. McGuire, MBA, FASAE, IOM, CAE. “I consider this honor the ultimate nod of support by some of the most influential voices in the association industry, who have selflessly given their time and talent to advance our profession while embracing a more inclusive environment for all.

“For those of us who find nonprofit work our calling, we lead with our heart, with a commitment to mission and sustainability of the respective associations we serve,” she added. “No one gets to this point without others, and I am grateful for having the opportunity to work alongside so many dedicated individuals in service to others.”
 
Ms. McGuire’s involvement with ASAE includes chairing the Certified Association Executive (CAE) Commission, the Communication Section Council, the CAE Item-Writing Committee, and most recently, ASAE Foundation’s Research Committee. She has also served as a member of the CAE Committees on Exams, Appeals, and Professional Conduct; the ASAE Foundation Research Committee’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Task Force; the ASAE Foundation Development Committee; and ASAE’s federal Political Action Committee (APAC). She is also an author and speaker at ASAE events.
 
Prior to joining IAAO, Ms. McGuire served as President & Chief Executive Officer of the American Fire Sprinkler Association, and previously as CEO and Executive Vice President of the American Academy of Family Physicians—Michigan Chapter and its charitable Foundation. She also has held leadership positions at the Michigan Townships Association, the Michigan Manufacturers Association, and the Michigan Pharmacists Association.
 
Joining Ms. McGuire as members of the 2023 class of Fellows were executives from the School Nutrition Association; the Associated Luxury Hotels International; the Association for Intelligent Information Management; and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

The Fellows program is among ASAE’s highest honors, recognizing individuals who have made a significant impact on the association community through outstanding volunteer service and inspiring leadership," said Janice Lachance, FASAE, executive vice president for strategic leadership and global outreach at the American Geophysical Union and chair of the ASAE Fellows. "These five professionals join a cadre of leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to ASAE and are thought leaders for the entire association community.”
 
The 2023 ASAE Fellows join 307 association industry leaders who have received this designation since the program’s inception in 1986.
