In an explosive move with potentially devastating consequences for some, the El Paso County, Colorado, Assessor’s Office plans to tax short-term rentals, often simply called by the brand name Airbnb, as commercial properties. The change opens a can of worms regarding how those properties are handled by city and county officials, insurance companies and lenders. After years of wrangling, an appeals court Monday rejected a property-tax exemption for a Gainesville acupuncture school that argued it qualified because it is an educational institution. The 1st District Court of Appeals sided with Alachua County Property Appraiser Ed Crapo, who in 2014 rejected an exemption for Academy for Five Element Acupuncture Inc., because he said it did not meet the legal definition of an educational institution for tax-exemption purposes. Read more
Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts’ designer house is worth more than twice as much as previously thought — and that could more than double his property tax bill next year and trigger a tab of at least $60,000 in back taxes and interest. That bottom line emerged Tuesday as the Cook County assessor’s office completed its reassessment of Ricketts’ property following a Chicago Tribune story that revealed the Republican National Committee finance chairman had been paying taxes as if the older, smaller house he’d torn down more than a decade ago was still there. Read more

+ L.A. County hauls in record $1.6 trillion in property tax assessments >
 Los Angeles County brought in a record $1.6 trillion in property tax assessments this year thanks to a robust sales market and new construction. The 2019 tax roll was $94.41 billion larger than the 2018 roll, an increase of 6.25 percent, the L.A. County Assessor’s Office announced Monday. “The strong growth in the local real estate market for the ninth consecutive year will have a positive impact on services for LA County’s 10 million residents,” L.A. County Assessor Jeff Prang said in a statement. Read more
 
A heated exchange erupted Tuesday night between the Grand Chute, Wisconsin, town board and a state lawmaker over inaction in addressing the "dark store loophole." WBAY-TV reports the loophole has cost the town $678,457.51 in tax refunds between 2013 and 2017, split among three big-box stores. Plus, the town has pending property tax lawsuits from Walmart and Sam's Club. Members of the Grand Chute town board have been asking the state for years to address the dark store loophole, and so far nothing has happened. Read more
 
+ Another Canadian municipality to accept bitcoin for property tax payments >
The City of Richmond Hill, a municipality in Canada, is set to accept bitcoin (BTC) for property tax payments from residents and businesses, according to an announcement  Monday. The municipality has partnered cryptocurrency trading platform and payments processor Coinberry for the initiative. Once the deal is concluded, over 200,000 residents of the city will see bitcoin as a payment option on the municipality's website. Read more
 
Nebraska lawmakers who want to update the state's largest tax incentive program for businesses are getting ready to try again with a lot of confidence, despite a major setback that stalled their package earlier this year. Senators who worked on the new incentives said they strongly believe the measure will pass in the 2020 session, just in time to replace the state's current program before it expires at the end of that year. Read more
