IAAO, URISA and Esri are collaborating to create a new GIS for Assessors
book and are looking for contributors from jurisdictions of all sizes
to reflect a wide range of perspectives. This book is intended to
benefit people across the entire GIS experience spectrum, from the
occasional user to those using it every day, and from those in small and
mid-sized offices to large jurisdictions. Each chapter will detail
applications of GIS technology directly related to land administration
and property taxes, and we would love to potentially feature your
jurisdiction.

Some
jurisdictions have recently faced a property tax valuation technique
known as the "Dark Store Theory." This theory involves big box retail
stores petitioning appeal boards to allow their open, in-use properties
to be compared to other stores that are closed and vacant (possibly for
many years). In most cases, this method of valuation reduces the value
of the current store to almost half what it was previously. Learn more
thanks to the new subject guide from IAAO's Library.

When
Seattle's historic Sam Hill home hit the market for $15 million last
July, it came with an equally outrageous selling point: no property tax.
The King County Assessor's office now says that has changed. The owners
of the mansion had been paying zero dollars in property tax and just
over $800 in fees, due to an exemption they received for remodeling the
home.

between America's two most famous tea parties, the Boston affair in
1773 and the protest movement that arose in 2009, there was a referendum
known as Proposition 13. Like the tea parties, it was rooted in an
abhorrence of taxation (with or without representation). Like them, too,
it had enduring consequences.

Respect
is a much-talked and much-written about cornerstone of effective
leadership, particularly the more human kind. Yes, leaders need to be
respected because it leads to a bond of trust that enables a culture of
