IAAO, URISA and Esri are collaborating to create a new GIS for Assessors
book and are looking for contributors from jurisdictions of all sizes
to reflect a wide range of perspectives. This book is intended to
benefit people across the entire GIS experience spectrum, from the
occasional user to those using it every day, and from those in small and
mid-sized offices to large jurisdictions. Each chapter will detail
applications of GIS technology directly related to land administration
and property taxes, and we would love to potentially feature your
jurisdiction.

Exxon
Mobil Corp. has stopped haggling with Harris County over its 2015 tax
bill. The Texas-based energy giant filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit
it filed against the Harris County Appraisal District over a $40 million
property tax bill. In the lawsuit, Exxon had claimed HCAD's $1.04
billion appraisal of the site for 2015 was "excessive and unequal in
comparison with other similar property in the appraisal district."

The
runaway winner in Florida's primary election was at the end of the
ballot, as voters overwhelmingly approved a tax break to encourage
businesses to go solar. The amendment, which will become part of the
Florida Constitution, exempts solar and other renewable energy devices
on business and industrial property from property taxes for 20 years.
The same tax break already exists for residential property owners.

A
strategy successfully used by some big box stores to cut local property
taxes paid in Michigan and other states is now being tried in Texas. In
at least four counties in Texas, the Lowe's home improvement chain has
challenged its tax bill, saying its property should be valued as if the
buildings sat empty. Only the stores, which are in Bexar, Harris, Hunt
and Taylor counties, remain open.

taxes this year, compared with last year’s record amount. State tax
officials announced that this year's property tax credit will be $89.57
