Local
taxing entities are beginning to feel the impact from the downturn in
the oil industry over the past couple of years.
And that means property owners will feel it when they get their tax
bills this fall.
Directors of the Dawson County Hospital District gave a preview of
just what may be coming.
During the board’s regular meeting, Chairman Cris Norris said the
hospital currently is looking at a proposed tax rate of about 37.9 cents
per $100 worth of property value.

According
to an El Paso County Assessor, property values have increased across
the board, rather than diminished, in the wake of the nearby wind farm’s
installation. In news picked up by Fox21 News in Southern Colorado —
which in and of itself is news, considering Fox’s owner, Rupert Murdoch,
has generally set himself against renewable energy — El Paso County
Assessor Steve Schleiker promised concerned citizens in his territory
that he would monitor the sale of property, with regards to its value in
the wake of the nearby wind farm developed southeast of Calhan, and its
attending above-ground infrastructure.

In
2013, Philadelphia’s City Council approved a $33 million tax-credit
package to help developer Brook Lenfest build two boutique hotels on a
vacant lot at 15th and Chestnut in Center City.
The deal was meant to offset the cost of the construction, which was
estimated at $280 million, using something called “Tax Increment
Financing.” Lenfest also secured other state and federal grants worth an
additional $42 million, bringing the total public subsidy of the hotel
project, which is supposed to include a W hotel and an Element hotel, to
$75 million.

“Major
urban areas in Texas experiencing some of the largest value growth in
the nation have only 20-to-32% of their appraisal hikes being actual new
construction increases,” said Senator Paul Bettencourt, chairman of the
Senate Select Committee on Property Tax Reform & Relief, busting
another property tax myth by stating that new construction is not the
major cause of property value increases around the State.

Louisiana
is giving away an average of $1.6 billion annually in tax breaks to
large manufacturers with little oversight and little return, according
to a new study released. Together Louisiana, a statewide association of
clergy and public interest groups that favors higher taxes on big
corporations and the wealthy, reports Louisiana has the most generous
industrial tax exemption in the country, allowing companies to avoid
paying their property taxes to local schools, sheriffs and fire
departments for 10 years, in two five-year increments.

Recently,
I had my very first experience with a ride-sharing app. All I had to do
was download the app to my phone and register for services. Within
minutes, the driver, who was personable and timely, arrived at my
location and took me to my destination. Now, when I say ride-sharing
app, did you automatically assume Uber? Well, that's why differentiation
is important between businesses.
