In what is seen as a significant victory for local governments, the
Michigan Court of Appeals has rejected a controversial method of
assessing the value of “big box” stores that has cost Michigan local
governments millions of dollars in property tax revenue.
The Free Press reported in April 2015 on the dispute over what’s known
as the “dark store” of valuing the stores.

Last spring, the Dallas County Central Appraisal District conducted one
of its most comprehensive review of property values in years.
Crews went out and snapped digital photos of every single parcel on the
tax rolls.
Each picture may have said a thousand words. But Jeanne Loman needed
just one when she saw the new value assigned to her property.
“Shock," Loman said. "Because it went up significantly. We had been in
the $400,000 range and now we're in the $500,000 range."

Legislation
aimed at limiting Kentucky’s agricultural preservation tax break to
working farms died without a hearing in this year’s legislative session,
but discussion of the issue will continue, officials said.
“We have just begun the conversation,” said David Beck, executive vice
president of the Kentucky Farm Bureau, who spoke on the topic at a
gathering of Lexington business people, along with Fayette Property
Valuation Administrator David O’Neill and David Gordon, the Department
of Revenue’s Director of Property Valuation. “We will continue to talk
about the issue.”

You
can add one more lawsuit to the mountain of litigation concerning how
and when Illinois hospitals are entitled to a property tax exemption.
Earlier this month a limited partnership filed a class action lawsuit
naming Northshore University Health System and all other hospitals in
the State currently exempt from property taxes as potential class
members, along with the Cook County Clerk and Treasurer. The lawsuit
seeks payment from each of the hospitals in the amount of taxes they
would have paid had the hospitals not received an exemption from
taxation.

The
San Francisco Giants are asking for millions of dollars in tax breaks
from the city, arguing that the value of their waterfront property has
fallen to $158 million, which would halve their tax bill from 2011 to
2014 by around $8 million.
That's a steep drop from the $407 million that city Assessor-Recorder
Carmen Chu last valued the property at in 2014 — and Chu has continued
to retroactively assess taxes as the city's real estate boom continues.

We are all flawed in one way or another. Most people choose to put an
emphasis on their strengths in order to help them succeed. What about
your weaknesses? In fact, it is even more essential to understand your
weaknesses. Realizing you have weaknesses will make you a better leader.
So how do you go about doing this analysis of self? You do not have to
go up high on a mountaintop and meditate to find out about yourself.
