Executive Board Updates to IAAO’s Professional Designation Recertification Requirements
Increase of Recertification Hours
The IAAO Executive Board made changes to the professional designation recertification requirements at its November 2008 meeting. The current requirement of 50 credit hours (tested or untested) for professional designation recertification every five years has been increased to 70 credit hours.
Designees (with the exception of the CMS designation) are required to complete at least two 7-hour Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) update courses. Please see IAAO Procedural Rules for specific requirements for recertification.
The Professional Designations Subcommittee proposed the following plan that allows the new requirements to be phased in gradually over the next five years. This plan was approved by the Executive Board:
- For designees whose recertification cycle ends 12/31/2009, the requirement will be 54 hours of qualifying continuing education;
- For designees whose recertification cycle ends 12/31/2010, the requirement will be 58 hours of qualifying continuing education;
- For designees whose recertification cycle ends 12/31/2011, the requirement will be 62 hours of qualifying continuing education;
- For designees whose recertification cycle ends 12/31/2012, the requirement will be 66 hours of qualifying continuing education; and
- For designees whose recertification cycle end 12/31/2013, the requirement will be 70 hours of qualifying continuing education.
Recertification USPAP and IAAO Workshop 171 Requirements
Effective January 1, 2012, it will be mandatory for IAAO designees, except CMS holders, to complete at least two 7-hour Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) update courses during their five year cycle.
The 15-hour USPAP Course will no longer satisfy the USPAP recertification requirement for IAAO designees.
Approved courses are IAAO Workshop 191, and any Appraisal Foundation approved 7-hour National USPAP Update course.
ALSO, effective January 1, 2012, it will be mandatory for IAAO designees, except CMS holders, to complete IAAO Workshop 171 (in class or online) during their five year cycle.
As a founding sponsor, IAAO agreed to comply with the Appraiser Qualifications Board’s (AQB) recertification requirements, which includes the change to the two 7-hour USPAP courses.
